Vin Facts Check helps buyers and sellers of classic, luxury, exotic and collector vehicles get clear, trustworthy vehicle facts fast. We deliver title and history records from commercial vehicle-history data sources, presented in a report anyone can understand, along with free guides to provenance, auction results, restoration costs and marque registries.
A 17-character code unique to each vehicle since 1981. It encodes the manufacturer, model details and a check digit.
VINs never use I, O or Q, and the 9th character is a mathematical check digit. A failure usually means a typo.
VIN validation is free (a free vehicle preview is coming soon). Title, accident, odometer, salvage, theft, owner and lien history are part of the paid report: Standard $9.99, or Premium $14.99, which adds auction history and auction photos.
The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System, a federal database of title and brand information from state DMVs, insurers and salvage yards.
You can enter its chassis number (5–16 letters and digits) in the main check and get a free "limited records" result showing where an older vehicle's records usually are. We can't sell a full history report for it: the national title database only searches standard 17-character VINs, which became the norm for 1981 model-year vehicles, so we never charge for a shorter chassis number. See our registries guide for other ways to research an older car.
Not yet. Premium reports include auction records and photos where available in our data sources. Comparable collector-auction results and marque registry cross-checks are coming soon, and we'll only add them once we have reliable sources. We are not affiliated with any registry, club or auction house.
No. Not every event is reported. Always pair a report with a provenance review and a pre-purchase inspection by a specialist who knows the marque.
Plate search is coming soon. For now, please use the VIN.
Yes, for free: our motorcycle VIN check decodes year, make, model and engine from a 17-character VIN. Pre-1981 bikes with shorter frame numbers get free guidance on heritage registries, clubs and state DMV records instead. Full motorcycle history reports are coming soon. We don't sell them until our title data source is connected for motorcycles.
Yes, free. Enter a U.S. N-number, or search by the manufacturer's serial number, on our aircraft page to see live FAA registration details and NTSB accident and incident history. It isn't a title search. For liens and chain of title, the aircraft page explains how to order a title & lien search from the FAA or an aircraft title company. Our own examiner-reviewed report is coming soon.
Our military vehicle page accepts a VIN, military serial or registration number, or state-assigned VIN. A valid 17-character VIN gets a free decode and can go to our full history report, which covers records from when a state first titled the vehicle. Military serial and registration numbers aren't in the national title database, so for those we explain the paperwork that holds the title record (SF 97, surplus sale documents, state DMV) and take no payment. We don't have military service, maintenance or combat records.
Yes. Our government & display vehicle check accepts a 17-character VIN (free decode, plus the full history report) or an older chassis, fleet or display ID. Records for non-standard IDs are limited, so for those we show where records usually are (SF 97 and surplus sale paperwork, the agency or museum, state DMV) and never charge.
Contact us within 30 days if your report returned no records; we'll review and refund where appropriate.
